wooden dowel or paint stirring stick

Instructions

Trace the outline of a ladybug on red construction paper. Cut halfway down
the center to make two wings.
* Write a letter on the ladybug.
* Trace the ladybug onto black paper. Cut out the black underside and attach it
to the wings with a paper fastener (this makes wings moveable).
* Make several of these ladybugs.
* Write several letters on smaller black circle stickers with a white pen.
What to Do
1. Read the children a book on ladybugs (see list below).
2. Talk with the children about ladybugs, asking the children to describe ladybugs.
3. Give some children the ladybug cutouts, and other children the black stickers.
4. Challenge the children with the stickers to find the ladybugs with the matching
letters and put the stickers on the ladybugs to make their spots.
Poem
Ladybug by Kristen Peters
A ladybug flies in the breeze.
It lands on flowers and the trees.
Upon a leaf to take a nap,
Her gentle wings no longer flap.
Her body red with spots of black;
I love to count them on her back.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify the letters on the ladybugs?
* Can the children put the ladybug letters in the correct sequence?
