Materials

Sentence strips or construction paper, cut into 3" (8 cm) wide strips

Strips of colored construction paper, 1" (3 cm) wide

Scissors

Glue

Stapler

Instructions

1. Show the children how to hold a colored construction paper strip and cut it into square pieces.

2. Next, show the children how to cut each square piece from corner to corner and make triangles.

3. Give the children strips and safety scissors and encourage them to cut squares and triangles sothat they have an assortment to choose from for their headbands.

4. Have the children glue the shapes onto the sentence strips in a pattern.

5. Measure the strips around each child's head and staple to make a headband.More to doMore art: Rubber stamps or vegetable prints can be used in place of the cutout shapes.Watercolors may be used to paint the students' faces with traditional Native American designs.Music: The headbands may be worn with paper bag costumes. Using rhythm band instruments,have a class performance with some children playing a steady beat on the drums and the othersdancing.
