construction paper cut into strips of different colorsstaplers

Instructions

1. Put the strips of construction paper and staplers in the Art Station.

2. Model for the children how to make a chain by making the strip into a circle and stapling it together. Then demonstrate how to thread another strip through the circle and staple it.

3. Do a few to show the children how to make a chain. Make sure to use different colors to make a pattern.

4. After stapling together about five or six circles of alternating colors, point out to the children the specific pattern you made (red, orange, red, orange, and so on).

5. Ask the children to come to the center and add to the pattern. Leave it out for a few weeks and measure it each day.

6. As a group, make a goal to construct a chain that will reach across the room or down a hall. The children will get excited watching it grow longer and reaching their goal.

7. When done, the chain makes a great decoration for your room.

8. If desired, make a chain to count down to a particular event. For example, make a red, pink, and white chain and remove a circle each day to count down to Valentine's Day.
