Materials
Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins
Large blocks
Plastic toy chicken or rooster
Instructions
1. Read The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle to the children. Encourage the
children to examine and describe the spider web on each page.
2. Go outdoors and choose a spot on the fence to design your own class spider
web.
3. Tie four pieces of string or yarn to a key ring, which will serve as the center of
the spider web.
4. Tie the opposite ends of the four pieces of string or yarn that are connected
to the key ring to four spots on the fence. This creates the four corners of the
spider web.
5. Give the children lengths of yarn or string. Encourage them to weave the
string in and out of the four strings on the fence, and the fence itself, to
create a web.
6. Continue until the children have created a huge spider web.
7. If desired, cut out paper spiders and add them to the web.
More to do
More books: Get some books about spiders and spider webs. Bring them
outdoors and sit next to the spider web while you read them to the children.
Art: Make spiders out of Styrofoam balls and pipe cleaners and add them to the
web.
