Materials
cards (sample picture word cards: clock, doorknob, box,
pillow (round and square), tub or shower, window, ruler, suitcase, rubber band, clothespin, drum, steering wheel, bunny's tail, turtle, stair step) bag paper and markerInstructions
l Cut out and laminate the cards and game board. Store them in a bag.
l Create a two-column chart. Label one column "corners" and draw an object
that has corners, such as a book, at the top of this column. Label the other
column "curvy" and draw an object that is curvy, such as a button, at the top
of this column.
What to Do
1. Set out the cards before the children. Introduce them to a few of the objects
on the cards. Ask the children to describe the shapes of the objects on the
cards you show them. Ask, "Is it curvy or does it have corners?"
2. After the children decide whether the object has corners or is curvy, set the
card in one of two columns.
3. Go through a few cards like this with the children, and then encourage the
children to take turns picking up the cards themselves, identifying the objects
on the cards, and then deciding whether the cards should be in the corners
column or the curves column.
4. Let them continue to play until they are out of cards. Then, help the children
shuffle the cards and repeat the activity.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify the objects on the cards?
l Can the child correctly determine whether the objects are curvy or have
corners?
l Can the child put the cards in the correct rows?
