Materials

1 apple

sharp knife (adult only)

Instructions

1. Show the children the apple and ask, "How many apples do I have?"
2. After you are certain the children understand you are holding one apple, use
the knife to cut the apple into two equal halves.
3. Ask, "How many apples do I have now?"
4. If a child says, "Two," press the halves together and ask, "How many apples do I
have?"
5. Cut the apple into fourths and follow the same procedure. Go slowly so the
children can visualize the concept that no matter how many pieces they see,
there is only one apple.
6. When done, have apples for snack.
More to do More Snack: Serve a soft fruit, such as bananas, for snack. Provide small nonserrated
plastic knives or sturdy craft sticks and have them cut their fruit into
several pieces before they eat it. As they work, make comments such as, "You cut
your banana into halves, Dominique." "Your banana is cut into thirds, Raphael."
