Instructions

Write numbers 1 to 5 (or 10, or 20) in a random order on a sheet of paper.
Create one sheet for each child using several different colors of paper.
What to Do
1. Provide each child with one sheet of paper.
2. Invite the children to crumble up their paper into a ball shape.
3. On the given command, the children find their own space in the room and
begin kicking their paper ball around the room. Children are to follow their
own ball wherever it lands and kick it again.
4. Blow a whistle to signal the children to stop kicking.
5. At that time, the children can pick up their paper balls, open them up and
recite the numbers aloud.
6. Children can exchange papers with a classmate and the activity begins again.
7. Continue until the children have had the opportunity to kick several different
colored paper balls and recite the numbers aloud.
8. To extend the activity, invite the children to line up in a row and throw the
balls as far as possible. Then have the children run to their ball and throw
it again in the same direction. Finally have the children open their paper
and read the numbers aloud. Repeat the activity, throwing in the opposite
direction.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child read his numbers aloud one at a time?
* Can each child point to each number as he recites it?
