Hole punch and reinforcements

String or yarn, 24" (60 cm) pieces, one per child

Instructions

What to do
1. Invite the children to decorate a paper bag with crayons or markers and stickers.
2. Punch a hole in the center of one side, about one inch (three centimeters) from the edge, and
reinforce it.
3. Show the children how to attach the string by pushing it through the hole and tying it securely.
4. The children will enjoy "flying" the kites by holding the string and running so the bags fill with
air.
More to do
More art: Use bits of paper and yarn to make faces and hair on the bags.
Outdoor play: Have a kite race.
Science: Talk to the children about how air occupies space inside the bag. Perhaps conduct other
experiments involving air.
