What To Do
1. Explain to the children that many trees grow new leaves in the spring. Tell them that they are going to create pictures of spring trees.
2. Have each child tear a tree trunk out of brown paper and glue it on a sheet of white paper.
3. Ask the children to dip the sponge pieces in the green paint and use them to paint leaves on their tree trunks.
4. When the paintings are dry, hang them up in the classroom for the children to look at and discuss.

The Buds on the Trees by Laura Wynkoop
(Tune: "The Wheels on the Bus")
The buds on the trees are opening up,
Opening up, opening up.
The buds on the trees are opening up,
All through the town.
The leaves on the trees are soft and green,
Soft and green, soft and green.
The leaves on the trees are soft and green,
All through the town.
The branches on the trees dance in
the breeze,
In the breeze, in the breeze.
The branches on the trees dance in
the breeze,
All through the town.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
- Can the children identify the color they used in their paintings?
- Are the children able to paint pictures of trees?
