Materials

sidewalk chalk

sand pails or plastic containers containing water

1" or larger paintbrushes

Instructions

l Use the sidewalk chalk to draw an assortment of 12" or larger shapes around
the playground or sidewalk area.
What to Do
1. Take the children outdoors.
2. Provide each child with a paintbrush, a
piece of chalk, and a container of water.
3. Invite the children to move around the
playground area and find a shape to
paint. Help them write their names
inside the shapes using
the chalk.
4. Encourage the children
to paint the shapes with
water until the shapes
disappear.
5. Suggest that the children move around the playground and talk about the
shapes as they paint.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l If you have a lot of sidewalk chalk, invite children to color in the shapes with
chalk and then paint over the chalk with water for some colorful fun.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children consistently paint the different kinds of shapes?
l Can the children name the shapes as they paint them with water?
