What to do
1. Talk to the children about summer vacation and traveling. Ask them if they have ever gone far
away and needed to pack a suitcase before leaving.
2. Make a suitcase for each child by folding the construction paper in half.
At the open end, cut the shape of a handle.
3. Encourage the children to pretend that they are about to go on a trip and to look through the
magazines or supplements for items that they would like to pack in their suitcases.
4. Have them cut out and glue the pictures in their paper suitcases.
5. Let the children decorate the outsides of the suitcases with crayons, and suggest that they
make a luggage tag for identification.
More to do
Circle time: Play the game "My Grandmother's Trunk."
Dramatic play: Place real suitcases in the dramatic play area. Encourage the children to pack
them with some of the dress-up clothes.
