Instructions

l Use the butterfly stencil to make several construction-paper butterfly
cutouts.
What To Do
1. Show the children several images of butterflies, and talk about the
butterflies. Ask the children if they have ever seen butterflies outside.
Ask the children what the butterflies were doing, and what they looked
like. Talk about how butterflies only come out in late spring and summer
because butterflies live off the nectar in blooming flowers and need warm
weather to survive.
2. Set out the butterfly cutouts along with the other art materials and invite
the children to decorate their
butterflies.
3. When the children finish
decorating their butterflies, help
them write their names along
the bottoms of the cutouts.
4. Punch holes in the tops of the
butterflies and help the children
tie thread to the butterflies.
Hang the butterflies from the
ceiling in various places around
the room.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Do the children understand why they see butterflies only in the warm
weather?
l Are the children able to decorate their butterfly cutouts?
