"Old King Cole"

What to do
1. Read "Old King Cole" to the children. Show the children pictures of crowns and their jewels, noting
the shape of the jewels. Invite the children to look over an assortment of faux jewelry.
Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
And a merry old soul was he.
He called for his pipe,
And he called for his drum,
And he called for his fiddlers three.
2. Distribute yellow sentence strips and markers.
3. Ask the children to design jewels on their strip, or crown, by drawing a variety of shapes such as
squares, rectangles, diamonds, circles, and triangles. Invite the children to color the "jewels" in a
variety of colors.
4. When the children finish, fit the strip around their head; holding the ends together, remove the
strip from their head, then staple the ends from the inside of the crown.
5. Have the children wear their crowns and recite "Old King Cole" again.

Games: Cut out shapes from construction paper and divide them in half; give each child one-half
of a shape and ask them to find the matching half.
More art: Decorate the crowns with sequins, glitter, or glitter glue for a shiny appearance. Cut
sponges in a variety of shapes and create sponge paintings. Draw shapes with stencils, then draw
a picture using only shapes. Make crayon rubbings of shapes. Design sun catchers in a variety of
shapes using construction paper and colored cellophane.
Snack: Cut fruit and cheese in a variety of shapes.
