Materials
Small glass vegetable oil ice cube
Instructions
1. Fill the glass with oil.
2. Place an ice cube in the glass. Notice that the ice floats near the top.
3. As the ice melts, water droplets sink to the bottom.
4. Explain that as water freezes, it expands and takes up more room. This makes it less dense and, therefore, it floats on the oil. Once it has melted, the water is heavier than the oil and it falls to the bottom.
