Materials

various types and colors of paper (wrapping paper, newspaper, brown bags, copypaper, and so on)12" x 18" sheets of tagboardlaminatorscissors

Instructions

1. Cut a 12" long numeral from each type of paper.

2. Glue each numeral to a sheet of tagboard and laminate.

3. Cut the laminated numerals into two to eight pieces (depending on children's skill level).

4. Keep one piece of each numeral puzzle for yourself and hand out the remaining puzzle pieces to the children. Explain that this is a "silent number game."5. Put one piece of a numeral puzzle on the floor.

6. The children with the remaining pieces of that puzzle come forward and put the numeral puzzle together without talking.

7. After the first group completes the puzzle, give them a round of applause and have them sit back down in their places.

8. Put out a piece of the next puzzle and continue the game until all the puzzles are complete.More to do Store each collection of puzzle pieces in a manila envelope. Invite the children to work independently to put one or more puzzles together. Help the children write their name on the envelope after they complete the puzzle so you can keep track of who has accomplished the task.
