Materials
poster board in various colors, including black
scissors (adult only) markersInstructions
* Cut out 10 to 15 large circles from the poster board, and one extra for the head.
Vary the colors.
* Use black poster board to make legs for each circle and antennae for the
head.
* Decorate the head with eyes, a nose, and a mouth, and attach antennae.
Attach the legs to each circle.
* Write one number from 1 to 10 on each circle, except the head.
* If possible, laminate the pieces for durability.
What to Do
1. Show the children the caterpillar pieces.
2. Hand out the numbered circles and talk about the numbers on the circles and
see if the children can name the numbers they have. See if they can guess
what animal this is supposed to be.
3. Tell the children that this caterpillar has to get ready for school, but he needs to
put his colors on in numerical order.
4. Place the head on the floor and ask the children what number comes first
when you count. See if they can find who has number one.
5. That child can come up and attach his circle onto the head. Continue finding
numbers in numerical order until the whole caterpillar is complete.
6. Leave the game in the math area for the children to complete independently.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children complete this puzzle independently?
* Can the children put the numbers 1 to 10 in the correct order using other
materials?
