large tray

dark cloth large enough to cover the tray

Instructions

1. Show the children the plastic numbers 1, 2, and 3. Discuss the straight lines of
the 1, the curving and straight lines of the 2, and the curved lines of the 3.
2. Let the children have a turn to feel the numbers. Encourage them to discuss
the way the numbers feel.
3. Put them on the tray and cover them with the dark cloth. Reach under the
cloth and move the numbers around.
4. Ask a child to touch one of the numbers through the cloth, feel it, identify it,
and then reach under the cloth and bring out the number to show the other
children.
5. After the child puts the number back, ask another child to touch a number.
6. When these numbers are easily identified by the children, add 4 and 5.
7. Continue adding the rest of the numbers as the children grow skilled in
identifying the first set.
