Learn Every Day About Numbers

Materials

textured wallpaper or carpet scraps

10 pieces of cardboard at least 7" high and 6" wide

glue

scissors (adult only)

ruler

10 3" x 5" cards

thick permanent marker in dark color

Instructions

* From the textured material, cut numbers 1 to 10 at least 5" tall and 1" wide.
* Glue each number onto a cardboard piece. Let dry.
* On 3" x 5" cards, print one number from 1 to 10.
What to Do
1. This may take several days, depending on the age and ability of the children.
You may want to start with only three numbers and work up to 10. Let the
children trace the textured numbers with their fingers, as if writing.
2. As you say the name of each number, invite each child to trace the number
and repeat its name.
3. Show a 3" x 5" card and have the children tell you which number matches the
textured number.
4. Count in sequence from 1 to 10, pointing to each number. Invite the children to
count along with you. Display textured numbers where the children can touch
them whenever they choose.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children trace numbers?
* Can the children identify the names of numbers?
