10 tagboard cards, 5" x 7"

yarn

scissors (adult only)

hole punch

Instructions

Make number cards with the 5" x 7" tagboard cards, writing one number
from 1 to 10 on each card. Punch two holes in the top edge of each card.
Thread and tie lengths of yarn through the holes, creating number necklaces
that can easily fit over a child's head.
What to Do
1. Show the number card necklaces to the children in random order, asking them
to name each one. Practice several times.
2. Put them in the correct order, and ask the children to name them again.
3. Next, mix up the order and give them to 10 children to put on. Ask them to
stand in front of the group.
4. Tell the children that the numbers are all mixed up, and ask one child to find
the number that should come first in the line.
5. When someone has found the child wearing the "one" necklace, ask that child
to stand at the left side of the line. Continue looking for the "two" necklace,
and continue until they are all in sequence.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* To help the children, have an extra set of cards in order on the floor, so they
can compare the right sequence of the numbers.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child name the numbers in random order?
* Can each child put the number cards in order?
