down vest permanent marker, fabric paint, or number stickers coat hook "Number Hero" name card colorful sand pail with a handleInstructions
* Use the markers, fabric paint, or stickers to add numbers randomly on the
down vest and the colorful sand pail.
* Hang the "Number Hero" name card above a coat hook. Hang the vest on
the hook.
* Display the number cards randomly about the room in places that could be a
safety hazard, such as on the stairs, on the edge of the sink, near a pair of
scissors, and so on.
What to Do
1. Invite one child each day to be the class Number Hero.
2. Have the selected child put on the numbered vest and carry the numbered
bucket.
3. Instruct the Number Hero to walk around the room and "rescue" one of the
numbers from danger.
4. Each time the Number Hero picks up a number, he places it in the bucket and
carries it back to the circle area. He then pours the number out on the floor
and tells how he rescued that specific number from certain danger.
5. After all 10 numbers have been "rescued" the child hangs the vest and the pail
back on the hook.
6. Children will look forward to rescuing the numbers on a daily basis.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child identify numbers and verbalize how they "rescued" each
number from a dangerous situation?
* Do the children know safety rules? Can they describe one or more?
