White drawing or construction paper

Strips of brightly colored tissue paper, 3 or more colors

Wide paintbrushes

Water

Instructions

1. Talk to the children about the beautiful lines of colors that can be seen in the night sky near theArctic Circle. Explain that these are called the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis.

2. Have the children wet down their paper with the paintbrushes and water.

3. Invite them to lay the strips of tissue across the wet paper.

4. Then have the children lift off the tissue strips to reveal lovely lines of color.More to doMore art: Have the children make a large picture, using large white butcher paper or bulletinboard paper and large strips of tissue paper. Hang it from the ceiling. Turn the lights off and letthe children shine flashlights, covered with different colors of sandwich wrap, onto the ceiling.
