Materials

camping tent and/or blanket

sleeping bag

large pillows

children's books about nighttime and nocturnal animals

three flashlights

shoebox

transparency sheets of various colors

stuffed nocturnal animals (optional)

Instructions

1. Set up your area as a fire station. Include firefighter clothing, such as plastic
hats, overalls, boots, suspenders, and badges. Let children set up chairs,
stools, blocks, and a steering wheel to make a fire truck or fire station.
2. Hang posters of firefighters in action. Include a basket of books about
firefighters and emergency volunteers.
3. Model the correct way to hold a fire hose. Let children put out fires!
4. Introduce the children to firefighter vocabulary, such as rescue, radio, fire
truck, and alarm. Be sure to mention that both boys and girls can grow up to
be firefighters.
