Smocks

Small trays

Tempera paint

Newspaper

Scissors

White construction paper

Instructions

1. Pour the tempera paint into small trays and invite the children to put on smocks.

2. Give each child a piece of newspaper and a pair of scissors.

3. Encourage the children to cut or rip the newspaper into smaller pieces and crumple, squeeze,or roll the pieces into shapes to be used as brushes for painting.

4. Invite the children to dip their newspaper paintbrushes in the tempera paint and use them tocreate designs on the white construction paper.

5. Display the finished artwork around the classroom.More to doMath: When the activity is over, encourage the children to count how many different kinds ofbrushes they made and used.More art: Try using other materials, such as strips of fabric or pieces of string, as paintbrushes.
