Instructions
1. Talk with the children about the
buildings they see every day. Show
the children the pictures from their
neighborhood. Ask the children
to describe what they see. As the
children discuss the pictures, help
them make the connection that
different types of buildings (houses
and apartment buildings) can have
the same function.
2. Show the children the pictures of similar buildings in other communities.
Challenge the children to identify and describe how the buildings in which
people live, shop, and go to school are the same and how they are different.
Help the children see that communities across the country and world are alike
in many ways because people have similar needs.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Discuss with the children why buildings in other places look different from
those in their community.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children identify buildings in their neighborhood?
l Can the children recognize similar buildings from other communities?
l Can the children suggest certain services that all people need?
