boxes of different sizes and shapes

Instructions

1. Provide the children with a variety of boxes.

2. Count the boxes with the children.

3. Ask the children to nest as many of the boxes inside other boxes as they can.

4. When they are finished, have them count the visible boxes (some of the boxes will be nested inside other boxes).

5. Talk about subtraction. If they started with 10 boxes, and nested six of the boxes inside other boxes, they would now see four boxes. Explain that 10 - 6 = 4. This may be a difficult concept, so focus on introducing the general idea of subtraction.
