Snow or crushed ice fresh or frozen vegetables large pot beef or chicken
broth large spoon several white sheets Styrofoam cups and plastic spoonsInstructions
1. Celebrate National Soup Month (January) in your class by making "snow
soup." The story "Snow Soup" can be found in "Kidactivities" in Kidstuff, a
Treasury of Early Childhood Enrichment Materials, vol. 6, no. 2, 1992, or Is
Your Storytale Dragging? by Jean Stagl. If available, read the story to the
children using real and felt board props.
2. To begin, go outside and gather some clean snow (to add to the soup). If
clean snow is not available, use crushed ice.
3. Cut up vegetables or use a couple of packages of frozen vegetables. (The
amount of vegetables will depend on the size of your class.)
4. Pour ready-to-use canned chicken or beef broth into a pot along with some
snow and let it simmer (adult only). Add vegetables.
5. When the soup is ready, lay several white sheets on the floor to represent
snow.
6. Ask the children to put on hats, scarves, and mittens, and then sit on the
sheets.
7. Pour soup into Styrofoam cups and eat.
