Instructions

1. Trace an outline of a body onto a piece of construction paper and cut it into
individual body parts (e.g., head, arms, hands, torso, legs, feet).
2. Draw parts of a face (e.g., ears, eyes, nose, mouth) on a piece of construction
paper and cut them out.
3. Divide a piece of white poster board in half by drawing a vertical line. Label
one side with the heading: "I have 1 of these" and the other side with: "I
have 2 of these." Place one dot above the numeral one and two dots above
the numeral two to help the children recognize the amount represented by
each numeral.
4. Place the poster board on the floor and arrange the cutout body part shapes
next to it in the shape of a person. Place the cutout face parts on the head of
the body shape.
5. Ask the children to sit in a semi-circle around the poster board and paper
person.
6. Help the children identify and count the various body parts addressed in this
lesson.
7. Read the poster headings to the children. Then, ask individual children to tell
you the number of each body part that he or she has. For example, "John,
these are eyes. (Point to your own eyes or the eyes on the paper face.) How
many eyes do you have?"
8. Ask each body part is identified and counted, place glue on the
corresponding paper part(s) and ask the child to attach it to the poster board
under the appropriate heading.
9. Continue until the paper person has been disassembled and all the pieces are
correctly glued onto the poster board.
More to do
Art: Show the children how to make handprints by dipping their hands into
tempera paint and pressing them onto large pieces of construction paper. Make
footprints too!
Science: Make an outline of a child's body by tracing around him or her on a
large piece of butcher paper. Label each body part (e.g., hands, feet, arms, legs,
head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and torso) on the outline. Then, cut the outline
into pieces to make a floor puzzle.
