Instructions

1. Pour water into the number cookie cutters. Put them into a freezer or outside
if the temperature is below 32 degrees F. Discuss with the children the changes that
take place when water freezes.
2. Allow the frozen numerals to sit at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes.
Observe what happens.
3. As the ice begins to melt, carefully remove them from the cookie cutters,
being careful not to break the ice.
4. Display the frozen numerals along with 55 ice cubes in a water table.
5. Provide ten containers for sorting the ice cubes into sets of one to ten.
6. Encourage the children to use the water table as a Math Station and watch the
hands-on learning fun.
More to do
Art: Before freezing a tray of ice cubes, insert Popsicle sticks into each cube.
After they have frozen, remove the ice cubes from the tray. The children can
hold the ice cubes by the Popsicle stick handle and "ice paint" sprinkles of dry
tempera on a piece of paper by moving the ice cubes through them to make
designs.
