Materials
4 sheets of 8 1/2 " x 11" white paper per child
markers, crayons, or colored pencils old magazines, newspapers, or junk mail glue sticks child-safe scissors stapler (adult only)Instructions
l Fold sheets of paper in half.
l Place three sheets inside one cover page to make a book and staple it
together.
l Write a shape word on the top of each inside blank page: circle, square, and
triangle, then paste cutout images of those shapes on the corresponding
pages.
What to Do
1. Talk with the children about various shapes.
2. Show the children a sample shape book, with shapes pasted on each page.
Explain that they will each be making their own books.
3. Give each child a blank book and challenge them to search old magazines and
newspapers for shape pictures.
4. Help the children cut out the pictures and glue them to the appropriate page.
5. After the children finish pasting shapes into their books, help them write book
titles on the covers, such as My Shape Book or Abby's Shape Book.
6. Keep the books in the class library for the children to look through.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l If time is a factor, cut out pictures before the children do the project.
Alternatively, ask the children to bring in a number of pictures they cut out at
home.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children recognize shapes in everyday objects?
l Are the children able to paste shapes on the appropriate pages?
l Do the children indicate that they understand how books are made?
