Instructions

1. Before starting this activity, draw or cut out pictures of a red strawberry, blue
sky, white dove (or any other white bird), green toad, brown bear, black
horse, orange juice, yellow dandelion, and purple Jell-O.
2. Glue each picture to its corresponding colored construction paper. If drawing
or finding pictures is not an option, just use sheet of red, blue, white, green,
brown, black, orange, yellow, and purple construction paper.
3. Write the poem "Crazy Colors" on a piece of chart paper. For each color
word, write the word using the appropriate corresponding marker.
4. Read the poem to the children.
5. Repeat the poem, and as you say the words, encourage the children to clap in
a pat-a-cake rhythm (they use both hands to pat their thighs, clap their hands
together, then pat hands with a partner). A rhythm children can do without
partners is to pat their thighs twice, clap once, and repeat the actions with
each line.

6. Give the children the pictures or colored construction paper. Ask the children
to hold up their picture when they hear their color word. Exchange pictures
until all the children have had a chance to hold up a color word picture or
piece of colored construction paper. The children who do not have a color
word picture can do the pat-pat-clap rhythm until it is their turn.
