Materials

  • Clean, empty baby food jars with lids
  • Sherbet to match the fruit
  • Small ice cream scoop
  • Fruit, any kind (banana, pineapple, orange, strawberries)
  • Frozen fruit juice

What to do

1. Give each child a baby food jar. Help the children scoop their favorite sherbet into their jar.

2. Add frozen juice.

3. Give the children cut-up fruit to add to the jar as well.

4. Ask the children to put on the lids and shake.

5. Open and enjoy. This is a great way to make individual fruit smoothies because there's no mess!

Instructions

1. Take the children outside to look for bugs ("potato" bugs are easy to find). A
good place to look is under rocks in the shade. Watch out for spiders!
2. Encourage the children to draw a picture of their bug.
3. Ask the children, "How many legs and antennae does your bug have? What
does your bug do when you touch it? Why do you think it does that?"
4. Encourage the children to draw pictures of their bugs in their natural
environment, such as under rocks, and so on.
More to do
Invite an entomologist to come in and talk to the children.
More Science: Discuss different plants and how they attract certain bugs, such as
butterflies. Explain why some bugs are good for the garden and some are not.
Books: Read books about bugs. (The library is a great resource.)
Field Trip: Go to a museum of natural history and visit the bug section.
