Instructions

l Cut a large number of both 2" and 4" squares from colored tissue paper.
l Twist each square in the center, creating a butterfly shape.
l Gently place all the "butterflies" in a large plastic tub.
What to Do
1. Gather the children together on the floor in a large circle.
2. Use a paper plate to scoop a collection of butterflies from the tub and toss
them over the heads of the children.
3. Invite each child to "catch" one butterfly.
4. Display the mural white paper in the center of the circle. Invite each child to
describe her butterfly and then place it on the paper.
5. Drop several more scoops of butterflies onto the paper as the children watch
them fly and land on the paper.
6. Gently pick up the paper and roll it into a cone shape (with the butterflies
inside).
7. Unroll the paper and let the butterflies again "fly" over the heads of the
children.
8. Repeat the activity, this time inviting children to collect several butterflies.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Provide a child with 10 (or 20) images of butterflies. Can the child describe
the color, sizes, and number of butterflies?
