Instructions

1. Label a box "Lost and Found" or draw a question mark for children who can't
recognize the words.
2. When items are found on the floor or in unlikely places, put them in the box.
3. When children have lost something, they should go to the box first before
asking a friend or you to help them find it.
4. At the end of the week, before story time, bring the box to circle and hold up
the found objects. Ask the children to guess who owns the items before they
are claimed.
5. When a child finds an item that belongs to him, he can transition to the next
activity.
Note: Add different items to the box, such as a "mystery object" that is
related to the next week's theme or a special item that has "teachable
moment" value, such as a telephone (dial 911), a stuffed animal (being a
responsible pet owner), or holiday items. You may even add a "message" item,
such as a magazine, to remind children to bring in magazines for a cut-andpaste
project.
More to do Math: Count and weigh the items.
More Math: Have the children sort the items into categories, such as soft/hard,
colors, clothes, toys, or size.
