Instructions

* Have an approved spot in the yard or
garden to plant a tree. Make sure the
soil is ready for planting and that it
will be easy to use a shovel in that
area. Dig as needed.
What to Do
1. Explain that today the children will
plant a tree.
2. Talk with the children first. Do they
know why trees are important? (They help purify the air, provide homes for
birds and other creatures, provide shade to keep animals and people cool,
prevent erosion, and act as windbreaks.)
3. Ask the children to follow you outside to the designated tree-planting site.
Each child participates in shoveling, setting in new soil, helping put the tree in
the ground, or watering.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Some children are stronger than others, but be sure everyone participates in
at least one of the activities.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children tell you why trees are important?
* Can the children describe how to plant a tree?
