Instructions

What to do
1. Bring in a collection of old and unwearable mittens or gloves. Ahead of time, you might invite
the children to bring in any mittens or gloves that no longer have a match.
2. Pour paint into pie pans.
3. Invite the children in turn to put on a mitten or glove and dip it in the paint.
4. Have the children make prints on their paper in any design or color, reminding them to change
gloves when they want to use a different color.
More to do
Dramatic play: Have the children pretend they are outdoors in the snow and encourage them to
don hats, gloves, scarves, and boots on their own.
Math: Play a matching game or make a pattern with pairs of gloves, mittens, and socks in various
colors and designs.
More art: Have older children decorate their prints with buttons, paint, or sequins. For each child,
cut out a pair of their mitten prints and punch a hole at the base of each mitten; attach the mittens
with yarn and use as a hanging ornament.
Outdoors: Take a wintry walk after dressing appropriately.
