Materials

10 types of small snack items (unsweetened cereal pieces, pretzels, wheat

squares, goldfish crackers, raisins, and so on)

10 bowls

spoons

cards labeled from 1 to 10

small plates or paper cups

Instructions

1. Ahead of time, place each snack in a separate small bowl with spoons on a
long counter or table.
2. Place a number card in front of each item. The cards could be in numerical
order or in random order, and duplicate numbers may be used.
3. Ask the children to wash their hands and get ready for snack.
4. Show them how to read the number card and count out the correct number
of each item using the spoon (and not their fingers). For example, if a bowl of
raisins has a numeral 4 card in front of it, the children add four raisins to their
plate or cup.
