images of colorful symmetrical objects

scissors (adult only)

Velcro

felt or cloth board

basket

Instructions

Gather colorful pictures of symmetrical objects such as birds, butterflies, fruits,
and planets.
l Laminate the images and cut in half. Round off any sharp corners and attach
Velcro or felt strips to the back of each piece.
l Prepare a felt or cloth board on which the children can match the halves.
l Place the halves in a small basket next to the board.
What to Do
1. Show the children the
matched halves and
discuss the idea of
symmetry, as well as
halves.
2. Mix up the pieces in the
basket. Challenge the
children to pair the
matching pieces with one
another on the felt
board.

l Include pictures of objects in different sizes, for example, small, medium, and
large butterflies.
