basket poster board clear, adhesive backed contact paper permanent black marker (adult only)Instructions
l Using a permanent black marker, trace the jar tops onto the poster board,
leaving a little space between each one.
l Cover the board with contact paper to protect it.
What to Do
1. Show the children the various jar
tops, as well as their outlines on the
poster board.
2. With the children, count the number
of jar tops and circles. Talk with the
children about how the number of
each is equal, and how this is an
example of one-to-one
correspondence.
3. Invite the children match the jar tops
to their outlines on the poster board.
4. Challenge the children to arrange the jar tops in a row or atop one another in
ascending or descending order.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Make boards for other shapes, using small boxes (squares or rectangles) or
triangles, ovals, or other shapes cut from cardboard. Increase the difficulty by
creating a board with a mixture of shapes.

To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child match the jar tops to their outlines?
l Can the child place the jar tops in order from largest to smallest?
