Cover a can or oatmeal container with brightly colored paper.
l Cut out various shapes from the differently textured materials.
l Trace the cutout shapes onto a large piece of poster board, making a
matching game mat.
l Laminate the game mat for durability. Consider mounting the textured shape
cutouts on poster board for durability.
What to Do
1. Show the children all the differently textured shape cutouts you prepared.
2. Identify the shapes for the children and discuss the characteristics of each.
Also, match the shape cutout to the like shape on the game mat, so the
children can see how they match.
3. After introducing each shape to the children, put it into the can.
4. When all the shapes are in the can, have the children take turns pulling shape
cutouts out of the can and matching them to the corresponding shape outlines
on the game mat.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Consider making a "big" version of this game, putting very large cutouts in a
large bin and drawing their outlines on a large sheet or shower curtain.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children match the shapes to their outlines on the game mat?
l Can the children identify basic shapes by sight and feel?
