Materials

cardboard shapes

scissors (adult only)

chalk

Instructions

l Cut out four circles, four squares, four triangles, and four rectangles. The
shapes should be 8" x 10" across.
l Use chalk to trace outlines of the shapes on the pavement.
l Trace three of each shape on the pavement in random order.
What to Do
1. Distribute the cardboard shapes to the
children. Talk with the children about the
number of sides they see on each shape.
2. Challenge the children to match the shapes to
the correct outlines on the pavement. Set no
time limit when the children start.
3. After a while, start timing how long it takes
the children to match all of the shapes.
Do this activity as a group or one child at
a time.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Be enthusiastic and complimentary as the children match the shapes.
Encourage cooperative behavior. Invite shy children to participate, and give all
the children an opportunity to "share and show" their ideas.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child differentiate between the number of sides the various shapes
have?
l Can the child consistently match the shape outlines on the ground to the
correct cutouts?
