pairs of paper shapes

carpet squares or sheets of paper 11" x 18"

Instructions

l Display the carpet squares randomly around the game area.
What to Do
1. Give each child a paper shape. Be sure each shape has a matching pair.
2. Teach the children this variation of the traditional song:
The More We Get Together (Traditional)
The more we get together, together, together,
The more we get together the happier we'll be.
'Cause your shapes are my shapes and my shapes are your shapes.
The more we get together, the happier we'll be.
3. Invite the children to stand in the group area. As they sing, instruct children to
walk around and find the children holding the shapes that match their own.
4. After the children pair up, have them sit down on a carpet square together as
they continue singing.
5. When all the children are sitting and the song ends, invite select pairs of
children to stand up and call out the name of the shape they are holding.
6. Once all the children are standing again, have them change the shapes they
are holding with another child.
7. Begin the song again. Repeat several times.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children match their shapes to shapes of their classmates?
l Can the children describe and talk about their shapes?
