Materials
paper straws (plastic may contaminate the bee eggs with bacteria)
glue
scissors (adult use only)
waxed cardboard single-serving milk or juice cartons
hammer
long nails
pictures of honeybees and orchard mason bees
Instructions
1. Encourage the children to create a beach scene using blue paper and crayons.
2. Invite the children to display their pictures and tell what they learned about
taking care of our world while at the beach. For extra fun have sand and glue
available so the children can create a sandy beach picture.
3. Place 10 of the items (include litter, shells, recyclables) in a plastic sand pail.
Ask one child to remove each item and tell whether it belongs in the sand at
the beach or somewhere else. Have the children explain where each item
should go if it doesn't belong in the sand.

Cleaning Up the Beach by Mary J. Murray
(Tune: "Baby Bumblebee")
I'm cleaning up the beach now, don't you see?
Mom and dad will be so proud of me.
I'm picking up anything I can see.
That doesn't belong in the sand.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* How well do the children differentiate between what belongs at the beach
and what is litter?
* Do the children understand why it is important to have clean beaches?
