Instructions
1. Have the children take off both of their shoes.
2. If the children are already wearing colored socks, have them display their feet
and say the color of their socks.
3. For the remaining children, hand each child a pair of socks to put on over their
own.
4. Invite the children to stand up and form a very large circle. (Use a gym or other
large space, if possible.)
5. Have the children walk counterclockwise and single file around the circle.
6. Call out two colors, such as red and blue. The children wearing red and blue
socks link arms together in groups of two or three and continue walking
around the circle together. The rest of the children continue walking alone.
7. Continue the activity as various groups of children link arms and walk together
as directed.
8. At any time, call out the word "rainbow." At that time, children join to form
one long line by placing their hands on the shoulders or waist of the person in
front of them, and walk in unison until you call the next two colors.
9. Play for several minutes.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Have the children line up on one wall of the room. Call out a color and
instruct children wearing the designated color of socks to walk to the other
wall. Continue until all children have crossed the room.
l Place the socks in a laundry basket. Can the children work in pairs to match
socks that are the same color?
