Materials

Margarine container and lid for each child

Assorted small objects such as buttons, stones, Styrofoam pieces, seeds, bottle caps, etc.Crepe paper streamers

Masking tape

Instructions

1. Give each child a container and lid.

2. Let him experiment with the sounds of each object by placing the objects one at a time into the container, closing it and shaking it.

3. Describe the sounds with words such as soft, loud, quiet, musical, rough, etc.

4. Let the child select what he would like for his maraca. Place the object(s) inside and lay streamers over the edge to be held in place by the lid. Than seal the lid with tape.

5. Use the shakers for rhythm and movement activities.More to doGames: For a sound identification game, gather several bells with different pitches. Play each one several times while the children watch. Then ask the children to close their eyes while you play one bell. Now children open their eyes and a child points to the one the teacher rang. The child may then ring the bell himself. Repeat with the other bells. * Matching Game: Place small objects into empty film or cat treat containers. Make two containers of each sound. Let children shake the containers and pair up the ones with matching sounds. Color the bottoms of the containers or use stickers to make the game self-correcting.
