tagboard

crepe paper streamers

scissors (adult only)

stapler (adult only)

markers

Instructions

l From the tagboard, cut 9" shapes of circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles.
l Cut the crepe paper streamers in 18" lengths.
What to Do
1. Ask the children to choose a shape to decorate.
2. Give them markers to decorate both sides of their shapes.
3. Help the children staple some streamers to each shape.
4. Teach the children the following song:
Circle Races by Susan OIdham Hill
(Tune: "Camptown Races")
Let's go on a march of shapes: Circle,
circle.
Hold that circle in the air
All around the room.
Hold your circle high!
Wave it in the sky!
Let's go on a march of shapes
All around the room.
5. Repeat the song, substituting other shapes for circles. Encourage the children
to name the shape with each successive verse.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l To extend the activity, ask some children to march with rhythm instruments
instead of shapes, using the musical triangle, a circular tambourine, a round
drum, and so on.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Show the children the tagboard shapes and ask them to name the shapes.
l Can the children sing the song?
