Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert

acetate sheets or heavy cardboard

scissors (adult use only)

red and yellow paint

shallow containers

sponges or stencil brushes

masking tape

10" x 12" pieces of burlap or another knobby weave fabric (paper also works)

Instructions

l Precut the mitten shapes if necessary.
l Hang the clothesline in the room at a
low enough height for the children to
reach. Clip the clothespins to the line.
l Hide one mitten from each pair of
mittens around the room.
What To Do
1. During the winter season, read the
children a book about mittens (see the list to the left). Talk with the children
about how mittens help keep hands warm in the winter.
2. Show the children the clothesline and the unhidden halves of the mitten sets.
3. Give each child one of the remaining mittens from the pairs and invite the
children to hunt for their matching mittens.
4. Once the children find their matching mittens, help the children pin them
to the clothesline. (Note: Working with clothespins is a great small motor
activity.)
5. Repeat the game as often as desired, giving the children new mittens to
match.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l For children who may have trouble with this activity, consider practicing
matching up the mittens before hiding them.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children match their mittens to those hidden around the room?
l Can the children pin their mittens to the clothesline?
