1. Ask the children to lie down on the floor, name a number, and create numbers
with their bodies.
2. First ask children to make numbers by themselves. For example, one child can
make the number one by lying on the ground with his arms at his sides. One
child can make the number two by lying on the ground, curving his hands
together above his head and bending his knees so that his legs form the base of
the number.
3. Have the children work together to make one number. Two children together
can form the number four. One child is the straight line and another child is
the top portion of the number.
4. Two children together can form the number 0. Ask a group of children to form
the number "40."
5. To extend the activity, take pictures of the children from above to show them
their "body numbers." Or, make teams in the class and see who can form the
number the fastest. Or, see if all of the children can make a number together.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children create numbers with their bodies?
* Can the children work cooperatively?
* Can the children recognize the shape of the numbers?
