sidewalk chalktagboard in various colorsscissorsbalance beam
Instructions
1. Cut out large shapes, such as a circle, square, rectangle, oval, diamond, and triangle from tagboard. Make one shape for every two children in the class. Cut the shapes in half.
2. Draw shapes on the blacktop or sidewalk to correspond with the tagboard shapes (you might want to trace them).
3. Have the children line up at one end of the balance beam.
4. Give each child half of a shape.
5. Have the children walk the balance beam and find the shape on the ground that matches their shape half.
6. Invite the children to put their shape half on the chalk drawing and wait until another player comes along to "make it whole."7. Ask the children to exchange their shapes with another child and then play the game again.
8. If you don't have a balance beam or as a variation, invite the children to run around the playground holding a shape half. When you blow a whistle, the children find a partner with a matching shape half. The two children hold hands and walk around to find the matching shape on the ground. Once they find their shape, they place their pieces on it to make it whole, and sit down.More to do: Snack: Cut an assortment of food items in half. Invite the children to work with a partner to make each item whole by matching like halves. Then let the children eat the food fractions.
