Materials

bucket

12 dry sponges

kitchen scale

blocks of ice or ice cubes

Instructions

1. Fill the bucket with 12 dry sponges. Ask the children to lift the bucket to see
how heavy it feels.
2. Weigh the bucket of sponges on a kitchen scale.
3. Discuss how to make the sponges heavier (by adding water). Add water to
the sponges and weigh the bucket again. Talk about the difference in weight.
4. Remove the sponges and put a small block of ice or ice cubes in the bucket.
Ask the children if they think the weight of an object changes if it changes
state (for example, ice to water, or a melted candle).
5. Weigh the bucket of ice and record the result. Let the ice melt and weigh the
bucket again.
