Materials

Contact paper in solids or stripes

Scissors

Gold glitter

Zip-closure bag or aluminum pie pan

Plastic straws, one per child1/8" (3 mm) wide ribbon cut in 12" (30 cm) lengths

Instructions

1. Beforehand, cut out two 2" (5") stars for each child fromcontact paper. Place glitter in a zip-closure bag or aluminumpie pan.

2. When you are ready to begin, help the children flattenone end of their straw.

3. Remove the backing from one star and show the childrenhow to position the flattened end of the straw inthe center of the star on its adhesive side.

4. Remove the backing from the second star. Press itsadhesive side to the straw and the adhesive side of thefirst star, without aligning the points of the stars; someof the adhesive on the stars should remain exposed.

5. Ask the children to hold the wand by the straw andmove it around in the glitter until the exposed edges ofthe star are covered with glitter. Have the children shakethe excess glitter from their wand and wash theirhands.

6. Knot a ribbon around each straw near the base of thestar, creating streamers.More to doLanguage: Ask the children to finish the sentence, "If I hada magic wand, I would…" and record their responses.Outdoors: Make bubble solution and play with bubblewands in the schoolyard.
